About the Course

Comprehensive Tools for Loudspeaker Testing and Diagnosis
Verifying loudspeaker features and specifications remains a major challenge for manufacturers and engineers alike. While the well-known Thiele/Small parameters provide a solid foundation for understanding loudspeaker behavior, many performance aspects - particularly under real-world, large-signal conditions - remain unaddressed.

This course offers a multi-domain approach to loudspeaker analysis, focusing on the complex electrical, mechanical, and acoustical interactions that determine sound quality and system reliability. Participants will gain in-depth insights into vibration modes, nonlinearities, and distortion mechanisms, as well as their connection to acoustical performance.

The seminar follows the loudspeaker design and development process, from parameter optimization to endurance testing and quality control. The program will devote particular attention to the diagnosis of transducer defects, with live demonstrations of state-of-the-art measurement systems and techniques.

What to Expect

The course features the latest innovations developed by Klippel, a global leader in loudspeaker testing technologies. Participants will engage with both theoretical content and live demonstrations, including:

  • The Multi-Scanning Workbench – An all-in-one system for detailed loudspeaker analysis

  • The Fast Large Signal Identifiction - A fast, reliable parameter measurement method

  • Advanced techniques for detecting and interpreting loudspeaker defects

Topics Include

  1. Introduction and course overview
  2. Small-signal measurements
    • Modeling and measurement of linear lumped parameters
    • Cone vibration analysis and diagnostics
    • Sound radiation and room interaction
  3. Distortion behavior and classification
    • Harmonic, intermodulation, and multitone distortion
    • Irregular distortion linked to loudspeaker defects
  4. Large-signal performance and nonlinear behavior
    • Inherent nonlinearities in electrodynamic drivers
    • Linking measurements to audible symptoms
  5. Meaningful specification formats
    • Endurance testing and long-term stability
    • Quality control procedures
  6. Nonlinear adaptive loudspeaker control

Who should attend?

This seminar is designed for acoustics students, audio engineers, and professionals in loudspeaker development and testing who are looking to deepen their technical understanding and explore the latest diagnostic methods.
